Farm Yard

Farm Yard

Farm Yard was first started as a way to encourage, empower and engage other backyard gardeners. I want people to have the necessary tools to find joy in farming their yards! I believe that small, collaborative agriculture can be a part of the solution to healing our Earth. I believe that growing food and cut flowers should be done close to home in engaged communities and by working with natural systems as much as possible.

The journey into backyard growing has evolved my own small space into a micro flower farm. I farm on my own 2/3 of an acre, have a small plot at my neighbor's house and a garden in the corner of a private orchard. The flowers produced are sold locally as subscriptions and at market, to other florists and used in my own designs for events.

Farm Yard uses growing techniques that focus on building healthy soil using on-site compost, manure, mulch, crop rotation and cover cropping. I love companion planting for pest control and soil health and use lots of plants to attract native pollinators. Water conservation is promoted by using drip irrigation, mulch and rain water harvesting.

Jess

Jess

My name is Jess. I grew my first garden in my parents backyard when I was 16. I dreaded weeding, now it is my nightly activity of choice. I have been growing food and flowers in some capacity ever since. In college, I studied global environmental studies. The more I learned about our issues as a planet, the more I saw the need for stronger communities where food and cut flowers are produced locally and with the greater environment in mind. Moab, Utah is home. This little oasis in the desert has a strong history of agriculture and fruit production. Our small town is teeming with backyard gardeners whom I am grateful to learn from, work with and hopefully share some inspiration. I am happiest when there is dirt under my fingernails and I’m clipping flowers in the first morning light.
