Season Extension of Tulips using Pre-cooled Bulbs and a High Tunnel

Julie Hall

For this project I will order 600 tulips, 200 each of 3 types of pre-cooled tulips including early and
mid blooming varieties. Tulips will be planted in soil in crates and kept at 40 degrees
in my garage to initiate root development. Once roots are established they will be moved to a
space where they can continue to chill and will be systematically moved into the high tunnel
over a 4 week period. I will move 50 of each variety into the high tunnel each week and label
each crate with a date.
I will measure their bloom time, daily temperature, height, # of marketable stems, and number
of stems sold. I will also track my labor and costs associated with growing the tulips to
determine profitability.
