- USU Small Farms | Utah Cut Flower Farm Association
Hi, my name is Melanie Stock and I run USU Small Farms with my team of graduate and undergraduate students. I’m a soil scientist and my role at Utah State is to develop and run a research and extension program that supports smaller scale farmers. I quickly learned about the amazing development of cut flower farms across the state – and also the lack of (research-based) information for growing cut flowers in our area. It was an easy decision to focus my work on cut flower production. I got into farming in a roundabout way. I loved gardening with my Dad for as long as I can remember. We lived in the city, so I was pretty removed from farming, but I ended up snagging a sweet landscaping job in high school and college that allowed me to work with plants in a new way. Later on, I became a chemist, but my love for plants never went away. I realized being a soil scientist would be a perfect and practical way to combine my interests in plants and chemistry (and later physics). I felt like I met the rest of my professional life during my PhD though: I started studying agriculture (because of my advisor) and running a community garden on the side (because of my love of food and people). After these two experiences, I knew I wanted to stay in agriculture and work with smaller scale farmers. Now I have my dream job at USU and love conducting agricultural research with my students - in the name of cut flowers - and work with cut flower farmers across our region.USU Small FarmsMelanie StockUSU Small Farms features a cut flower program for research, teaching, and extension. Our research focuses on tailoring cut flower production to Utah growing conditions, as well as testing environmentally responsible farming practices. We teach our students through hands-on farm internships and host outreach events to share our findings across the Intermountain West. Our flowers are primarily sold to Utah florists, and we use these sales to support our students and study the local cut flower market. The USU Small Farms team consists of graduate students, undergraduate students, and me (Melanie Stock, USU faculty). Special acknowledgement goes to Maegen Lewis, my MS student with the biggest passion for cut flowers, and the person who deserves all the credit for managing the day-to-day needs at our farm, including undergraduate student training and sales. We specialized in peony, snapdragons, stock, lisianthus, dahlias, zinnias, celosia, foxglove, and delphinium. Our cut flower trials are established in North Logan at the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station – Greenville Farm, and we also collaborate on trials with growers across the Wasatch Front. Most of our flowers are sold through Florage Flower Farm Co-op.Please email Melanie Stock if you are interested in purchasing USU Flowers. < Back Edit My Profile USU Small Farms USU Small Farms features a cut flower program for research, teaching, and extension. We are expecting more next season as the tubers multiply. Hi! I’m Chelsea, owner of Sunnyside Urban Farm. I am the grower and harvester of all the beautiful flowers we sell. I am one of the creative visions behind this farming journey, and envision a small orchard, berry patch and vineyard down the road. Gratefully, I am lovingly supported by my amazing farmhand-husband. Together, we raise 6 busy children that keep us on our toes. Along with growing flowers, I teach yoga, host small scale events on my farm and love to adventure! Sunnyside Urban Farm and CutflowersChelsea BeutlerI started Sunnyside Urban Farm in 2020. At first, I did local Upick events as a test market — and it was so well received! Eventually, signed on with the Utah Flower Market to grow wholesale flowers for event florists and have been growing in more ways than one ever since. Our farm is always changing, but our dedication to growing top-quality flowers remains the key to our garden. - Cold Creek Flower Farm | Utah Cut Flower Farm Association
My name is Arica Allen and I am the owner of Cold Creek Flower Farm, a small 1.5 acres farm in beautiful Cache Valley. My husband and I have created a small flower farm with our 3 children. My background in the floral industry and working at a local greenhouse inspired me to grow some of my favorite flowers for special events and arrangements that florists love using. Since my love was for the flowers, I decided to shift my focus to growing the flowers instead of creating wedding and event florals. I love how each flower has its unique quality and come in a variety of colors. My mom is a flower lover as well and I enjoyed tending the garden and flowers with her throughout my youth. Meeting some local flower growers helped inspire me to do a test garden in my own backyard. We had some tremendous success that first year and now we are attempting to “grow” our business with a much larger footprint. Seed production and creating new varieties is one area we would like to pursue down the road. For now, getting our flowers to wholesale markets and other flower lovers will be our goal as we stop and “smell the flowers” growing in our rows. We are creating our own home garden and raising our 3 children and Lucy, our dog who loves to chase the butterflies.Cold Creek Flower FarmArica AllenOur Farm is located in the foothills of Cove, UT. We are currently growing on 1.5 acres with two unheated greenhouses that let us extend our season. We love that our farm is a family operation where our children have the opportunity to learn to work and appreciate what the land can provide for us. We grow specialty cut seasonal flowers from March-September each year. We have concentrated our efforts on ranunculus, anemone, tulips, dahlias and peonies. We are always experimenting with different varieties and have extended our collection to grow lisianthus, sunflowers, and snapdragons. Hi, I'm Julie Hall. I'm a farmer/florist growing fresh cut flowers on 1-acre of land in beautiful Mapleton, UT. I'm also a mom to 7-year old twins, a writer, an avid reader and I love a good adventure! I began selling flowers in 2020 and even though the world was tumultuous it was actually a great year to begin. It was a gift to be surrounded by beauty and share that beauty with others during such a difficult time. I'm so grateful for the kindness I get to be a part of as people give my flowers to people they love. (That feeling is what keeps me going on hard days.) I am also learning everyday to lean into the challenge of growing a business and an enormous garden and a young family at the same time! Thanks for supporting my small business and local flowers! Maple Bloom Flower FarmJulie HallAt Maple Bloom we believe in the power of flowers to create connection, bring joy, spread kindness, and make the world more beautiful. We grow specialty cut flowers and foliage on our 1-acre farm nestled in the foothills of Maple Mountain. We love our land! We believe in stewardship and sustainability. It's important to us to farm in a way that is good for our family, good for our ecosystem and good for our community. Because of this we use organic and regenerative farming methods. We grow over 180 varieties of cut flowers and foliage and sell both to wholesale customers and the public. You can help bring a little beauty into the world by purchasing a flower share, buying an arrangement or wrapped bouquet for someone you love, or picking up flowers for a special event. - Country Sunshine Flower Farm | Utah Cut Flower Farm Association
Welcome to our flower farm! My name is Paige Goodson, and together with my husband Michael, we've started out on a little adventure. Michael is a 4th generation agricultural farmer, and I am an educator. We live on our farm property that has about 200 adjoining acres. I have a passion for flowers and the joy they spark in all who give and receive them. In recent years, I've taken a slice of our acreage to grow, experiment, meditate, and find calm in the garden. From seed to harvest, flowers represent such a beautiful cycle.Country Sunshine Flower FarmPaige GoodsonIt is our desire to have others share in that experience as well. When I was little, I wanted a cement yard and nothing to do with gardening. My parents were both avid gardeners: my father with vegetables and my mother with flowers. I would begrudgingly assist when asked to do so. But as I've grown older, (hopefully) wiser, and gained some life-experience, the soil, the process, the success and the failures of gardening have provided a sanctuary that gives me peace. The flowers are the product, but the journey is what is important. It's the journey of self-discovery, persistence, and learned gratitude for what we cannot control. While we are blessed with many acres to grow our crops; it doesn't take but a few square feet to experience the journey. Our flower farm sets out to help the backyard gardener experience the joy of growing, harvesting, and sharing flowers. < Back Edit My Profile Country Sunshine Flower Farm It is our desire to have others share in that experience as well.
