Distant Drums roses grown under low tunnels will be compared with uncovered controls. Air and soil temperatures, leaf-out, bud development, bloom timing, stem counts, and stem lengths will be monitored to evaluate the potential for a Mother’s Day harvest. Grant Proposals and Outcomes Explore grower-led proposals and research findings advancing local, sustainable floriculture in Utah. < Back Comparing harvested white chantilly snapdragons planted in the fall, early spring, and late spring, Lori Partridge and Kaitlyn Reich Lori Partridge and Kaitlyn Reich 2026 We obtained a soil sample from each spot that we planted. According to the recommendations from the soil sample results, we amended the soil. We will plant 175 white Chantilly snapdragons in the fall (October 2025), early spring (2026), and late spring (2026). Flowers planted in the fall will be covered with a triple layer of frost cloth when temperatures fall below 20 degrees. We will randomize each plot so each plot has all 3 subjects in them, with a total of 4 plots. We will measure and compare harvested stem and stem lengths. We will plant them on our property in Bountiful. All plugs grown in different seasons will be watered, pinched, and harvested using the same methods. Hi, my name is Melanie Stock and I run USU Small Farms with my team of graduate and undergraduate students. I’m a soil scientist and my role at Utah State is to develop and run a research and extension program that supports smaller scale farmers. I quickly learned about the amazing development of cut flower farms across the state – and also the lack of (research-based) information for growing cut flowers in our area. It was an easy decision to focus my work on cut flower production. I got into farming in a roundabout way. I loved gardening with my Dad for as long as I can remember. We lived in the city, so I was pretty removed from farming, but I ended up snagging a sweet landscaping job in high school and college that allowed me to work with plants in a new way. Later on, I became a chemist, but my love for plants never went away. I realized being a soil scientist would be a perfect and practical way to combine my interests in plants and chemistry (and later physics). I felt like I met the rest of my professional life during my PhD though: I started studying agriculture (because of my advisor) and running a community garden on the side (because of my love of food and people). After these two experiences, I knew I wanted to stay in agriculture and work with smaller scale farmers. Now I have my dream job at USU and love conducting agricultural research with my students - in the name of cut flowers - and work with cut flower farmers across our region.USU Small FarmsMelanie StockUSU Small Farms features a cut flower program for research, teaching, and extension. Our research focuses on tailoring cut flower production to Utah growing conditions, as well as testing environmentally responsible farming practices. First thing to know about me is one of my biggest passions is flowers. Growing flowers, arranging flowers, and teaching about flowers make me excited. My passion for flowers began when I had the opportunity to attend a study abroad in London. I always knew flowers were beautiful, but when I was in London I was amazed by the charming landscapes full of flowers. After, my study abroad I became a teaching assistant at BYU for Floral Design and started my own floral company. Upon graduating I spent a year working in floral wholesale followed by event planning. I spent many years doing this and the opportunity came up to apply to be the floral design adjunct professor at BYU. In order to apply I needed to have a masters degree. I attended Washington State University and received my degree in Agriculture. While working on my degree I knew I wanted to start a flower farm and bring flowers to the community around me. While I still do lots of events I decided having a flower farm would create a beautiful atmosphere for my 3 children.
