Growing up, I didn't have the proverbial green thumb. I would flip through seed catalogs and stare longingly at houses with lovely yards, all while yearning to grow a beautiful garden of my own. I knew it was possible to do here in our arid climate as I have watched my dad and grandfather grow incredible gardens year after year. One day, several years ago, I decided to figure it out so that I could get my hands dirty and feed my passion for flowers. In 2019, this dreamer made the choice to plant a large plot of sunflowers on some of our family's land the following spring. I could never have imagined the impact those flowers made on me and the friendships that would blossom from that venture. Now, a few years down the road, I have moved the "farm" to a much smaller area on a portion of my half acre of red dirt near Zion. I am forever a student of the flowers as I learn which flourish the best in our unique growing conditions. They take a special kind of care and love to grow in the desert, and I am grateful to be here for the journey and for the joy these flowers bring not only to me, but to all who receive them.Blue Sky BloomsKimberlee HendersonUnder the blue skies and warm sunshine of the Southern Utah desert near Zion National Park, growing beautifully in the sandy red dirt, an ephemeral oasis of seasonal flowers bloom. As the owner of Small and Simple Farms, Emily Judson Sinkovic combines her passion for growing beautiful things with improving the human condition. With formal schooling in peacebuilding, and graduate studies in conflict resolution and restorative justice, Emily uses her additional skills as a grower to share knowledge and beauty with incarcerated individuals. The daughter of an avid vegetable farmer, Emily was taught from a young age to care for the earth. She is especially interested in sustainable growing methods, including a no-till approach, cover cropping, and a balanced ecosystem.Small & Simple FarmsEmily Judson SinkovicSmall & Simple Farms (Nephi, Utah) was founded on the idea that “by small and simple things are great things brought to pass.” Small & Simple Farms recently partnered with the Utah Department of Corrections to bring more beauty into the lives of the female residents of the Utah State Correctional Facility. With generous support from Erin Benzakein of Floret Flowers, the growers of the Utah Flower Market, and individual sponsors, they have been able to bring fresh flowers, holiday wreaths, and educational opportunities to the incarcerated women. It is such a simple thing to provide flowers for a group of women. But the comments from the prison residents demonstrate the tremendous impact it can have: “I don’t even remember the last time I saw this many colors!” “The smell is so fresh. It’s been 16 years since I smelled a flower.” “Ohhh Jesus, thank you for letting me see these beautiful flowers today.”Nephi Farmers Market < Back Edit My Profile Small & Simple Farms Small & Simple Farms (Nephi, Utah) was founded on the idea that “by small and simple things are great things brought to pass.” Small & Simple Farms recently partnered with the Utah Department of Corrections to bring more beauty into the lives of the female residents of the Utah State Correctional Facility. - Wild Willow Gardens | Utah Cut Flower Farm Association
How do you know if you're supposed to be a farmer? Carlyn and Brandon both grew up with agricultural families. It was normal to spend summers picking apples and making forts. Somewhere along the way too many people said that farming wasn't viable. 'Don't do this.' they recommended. After starting a family and careers, farming called again and wouldn't leave them alone. More than anything, that idea wanted to be. At first they borrowed a neighbor's backyard and turned it into a garden. After several years they established themselves in Springville on a permanent space. They love the feeling of being connected to the land and watching it produce abundantly. They enjoy bringing that feeling to other people. They believe this work can be sustainable, lift and inspire the human heart, and heal the soil.Wild Willow GardensCarlyn ThompsonThe farm began its career as a cow pasture. For decades, this place was only good for raising cattle. Then in the mid 1990's a family bought the property with only one scraggly tree on the entire farm. Ironically, it fell over shortly thereafter. For the next 25 years the farm slowly transformed into a beautiful space with ponds, orchards, gardens, native trees, and eventually even a place for a few cows :) Now the farm is transforming again. By embracing natural processes and a new focus on regenerative agriculture, the farm is beginning to produce more abundantly than ever. It will be a thriving space that not only provides the finest blooms, but also inspires those who find it. < Back Edit My Profile Wild Willow Gardens The farm began its career as a cow pasture. - Paisley Flower Farm | Utah Cut Flower Farm Association
My name is Lindy Bankhead, and I began growing specialty cut flowers 7 years ago. I began in Landscape Architecture at Utah State University, and after graduation worked at several nurseries in Logan. While raising our children at home, my husband and I built a hoop house in 2012 and I started my farm called Paisley Flower Farm. It's a wonderful industry, and I've learned so much over 7 years. Local cut flowers are so important to our local florists and economy. They really fill a niche, that isn't available through traditional imported flowers. Local flowers are more unique, fresh, fragrant, colorful, and last longer. They hold special meaning for the customers enjoying them, as they know they were grown in the same special area that they call home. Florists are also so excited about local flowers, as I can grow and bring them flowers that they can't import in. Because I'm local, the quality of my flowers totally out shines the flowers flown in boxes from countries away. It's a special feeling, to show up to the florist's shop and have them so excited by what's in my truck! I enjoy what I do, and see it not as a job, but a life-long passion that I'm blessed to share with others.Paisley Flower FarmLindy BankheadI feel incredibly lucky to grow flowers on land that has been in my husband's family for generations. My family lives and farms in the shadow of the Wellsville mountains and we often find pieces of farm tools, dishes, and toys in the soil we work. It reminds us of the love of the land and the appreciation for this land that has supported and sustained our family. My husband grows alfalfa with his family and operates an irrigation store in Logan. I work at home with our children and raise cut flowers for our local florists and flower-loving customers. I am so grateful for the many people in our community that support us as local farmers. I have been so impressed by the community's willingness to support a local farm and family. This encouragement is what keeps us going as we continue to work the land, and invest in growing cut flowers.Island Market in Logan, UT < Back Edit My Profile Paisley Flower Farm I feel incredibly lucky to grow flowers on land that has been in my husband's family for generations. Hi, I'm Julie Hall. I'm a farmer/florist growing fresh cut flowers on 1-acre of land in beautiful Mapleton, UT. I'm also a mom to 7-year old twins, a writer, an avid reader and I love a good adventure! I began selling flowers in 2020 and even though the world was tumultuous it was actually a great year to begin. It was a gift to be surrounded by beauty and share that beauty with others during such a difficult time. I'm so grateful for the kindness I get to be a part of as people give my flowers to people they love. (That feeling is what keeps me going on hard days.) I am also learning everyday to lean into the challenge of growing a business and an enormous garden and a young family at the same time! Thanks for supporting my small business and local flowers! Maple Bloom Flower FarmJulie HallAt Maple Bloom we believe in the power of flowers to create connection, bring joy, spread kindness, and make the world more beautiful. We grow specialty cut flowers and foliage on our 1-acre farm nestled in the foothills of Maple Mountain. We love our land! We believe in stewardship and sustainability. It's important to us to farm in a way that is good for our family, good for our ecosystem and good for our community. Because of this we use organic and regenerative farming methods. We grow over 180 varieties of cut flowers and foliage and sell both to wholesale customers and the public. I’m Katy and I have been in love with flowers all my life. I come from a family of flower gardeners and I have owned a garden maintenance and consulting business for 26 years. Two years ago I started selling bouquets of flowers that were grown in my own yard. The idea has evolved into a business where I am learning and creating and expanding all the time. I enjoy providing fresh seasonal flowers to the local community and sharing the message of the economic, environmental and social benefits of "buying local".Utah Flower and FoliageKaty RoachUtah Flower & Foliage is a micro farm located in the Salt Lake Valley. Ever since I heard about the Slow Flowers movement several years ago, it has been my dream to have a flower farm of my own. I grow a wide variety of annuals, perennials and shrubs and my favorites are the old-timey fragrant flowers like roses, viburnum, lilacs, iris, heliotrope, and sweet peas.
